Uglies--our new reality?

One of my favorite books is Scott Westerfeld's Uglies. I enjoyed the entire series, but especially appreciated the first book. It said a lot about how we view beauty. The main character thought she would only be beautiful when she had surgery and became what the world had decided was beautiful. Unfortunately, this same thing is all too real in the world we live in today--I've heard little girls and grandma's alike talk about how they are so excited to get some "work done" someday.
Now these lucky people can buy a mirror similar to the one in Uglies. They can look in the mirror and see what they would look like with a slightly different face. Take a look in the Augmented Reality Mirror » Coolest Gadgets.

  1. That's scary! And at the same time, really cool! It might be a lot of fun to play with (even if you were never serious about having plastic surgery).

  2. My desk-top camera has a feature that can alter my face. You're right, it is fun to look like Rapunzel in the cartoon Tangled--with those huge eyes :)

  3. This is really fun, but sad that people feel a need to have plastic surgery to feel good about their appearance.

  4. It is sad, Jennifer, especially when we have so many unrealistic models of what "beauty" is!
